How the EASEE® system works

EASEE® is a minimally invasive stimulation procedure for people with focal epilepsy when medications do not provide adequate relief. Your Journey with EASEE®

Referral to the Epilepsy Center

You speak with your treating neurology team about whether EASEE® may be a suitable option. If needed, you will receive a referral to a specialised epilepsy centre or an EASEE® centre of excellence with dedicated experience.

Evaluation & Counseling on EASEE®

At the centre, your epilepsy is assessed in detail — for example, to confirm focal epilepsy with an identifiable epileptic focus. This typically includes EEG recordings and imaging, as well as determining whether a clear, predominant focus is present. You will receive a clear and comprehensible explanation of EASEE®, including its benefits, limitations, and risks. A shared decision is then made as to whether EASEE® is the right option for you.

Surgery & Implantation

The EASEE® system is implanted minimally invasively: the thin EASEE® Lead electrode is placed beneath the scalp, directly above the area where your seizures originate. The EASEE® Power pulse generator sits in the chest area and is connected to the electrode via a thin cable running beneath the skin. The procedure typically takes approximately 1–1.5 hours. In most cases, you will be able to return home after 1–2 days. 

Activation

After approximately four weeks, the stimulation is activated and the therapy is individually adjusted for you, ensuring the stimulation remains imperceptible.

Follow-Up Care

You remain in regular contact with your epilepsy centre. Settings can be adjusted to optimise therapy and any questions can be addressed. Many patients report a gradual improvement over time that can continue to stabilise over the course of months.

FAQ: Frequently asked Questions

EASEE® stimulates the brain precisely via a thin electrode placed beneath the scalp — without touching the brain. The stimulation acts directly at the epileptic focus, reducing seizure frequency over the long term.

In clinical studies, EASEE® demonstrated a well-tolerated safety profile. No serious therapy-related adverse events were reported. As with any procedure, temporary discomfort at the implantation site or related to anaesthesia may occur.

Most patients are able to return home after 1–2 days. Wound healing typically takes a few weeks before the stimulation is activated.

Activation takes place approximately four weeks after surgery. At this point, the therapy is individually adjusted for you.
